The Golden Compass

The first book in His Dark Materials trilogy is being made into a movie and the trailer is out!* It looks quite good, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high because they could still mess about with it enough to make it just good, rather then spectacularly good (compare the LOTR movies to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for an example of this). I think Daniel makes a formidable looking Lord Asriel, just as should be; though I'm torn over Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter. There's something about her that's just so... vanilla. Kind of boring, not enough edge. Mrs. Coulter is a very tricky character - you're always uncertain whether she's good or evil or a mixture of both. I don't know if Nicole Kidman will be able to play her and show all of her... nuances, I guess. Hmm, let's see... If I were to have cast Mrs. Coulter, my top choices might be...

... actually, Angelina Jolie comes to mind and won't go away. You know that half-smile she's so good at (and usually over uses)? Well, that would actually be perfect for Mrs. Coulter... And she's definitely lushly beautiful enough...

Hmmm. I don't know. I worry that it will be CGIed to death like Narnia. But then, Daniel Craig... :]

Yeah, you could be right. :(

Although... the LOTR was CGI'd but it still looked good! And this is from the makers of LOTR! :)

Wish makes me feel hopeful. I know there was tons of CGI in LOTR, but it seemed more natural than Narnia. Maybe because Naria was full of critters that actually exist, so I know what they should look like?

Wish?

Yeah, that's actually a really good point about the Narnia animals! The CGI in LOTR was more when it came to embelishing the size of the armies and the oliphants and the buildings - all things that you can get away with tricking your audience over.

But with Narnia, the CGI stuff was right up in your face - like with Mr. and Mrs. Beaver - and you're totally right, it didn't seem quite... right.

Did I say 'right' enough in that sentence? :P

Hmm. Well, I don't know if you've read the Dark Materials trilogy (have you? I'm actually quite curious!), but if you have then you can make some educated guesses as to what's going to have to be CGI'd. I guess Iorek is the one I'm most nervous about, but in the previews he actually looked pretty good!

Which... I think that's what I was saying. Which makes me feel hopeful. Just agreeing with ya!

Have read the first one (by the way), but not the others. Kept meaning to, but school got in the way.

Aha! It makes much more sense with "which." :)

It is a wonderful trilogy. Carmen and I both loved it and have discussed it a lot. Apparently the daemons are left out of the movie! That was one of the most interesting parts.

It just now occurred to me that there are some points of the Dark Materials, esp the last one, that remind me of the Book of Judas that has just been translated. Not to mention Paradise Lost.

Wonder what Elliot would say.

(and you are right about Kidman and Jolie. Not that I have ever paid much attention to either. You're just right)

WHAT!? How can they possibly leave out the daemons!! That's crazy! I'll protest outside of the theatres! What is Lyra *without* Pan? He's her soul!
