What's so crazy about believing in aliens?

For once Tom Cruise is right. No, seriously. Isn't it foolish to assume that we're alone in the universe?

For a long time it was the standard view. But recently a lot of scientists have been arguing that we may well be the only intelligent species. They've got all sorts of probability calculations to back them up.

One famous physicist figured out, based on the size and age of the universe, that A) if space travel is possible and B) intelligent creatures aren't rare, then C) the universe should be chock-full of colonies and messages flying back and forth and we would have picked up something by now. But we've heard nothing.

I hope they're wrong. But who knows!
